Food For Thought

Known primarily for Iron and Civil Rights, Birmingham is now seen on lists of cities with incredible restaurants!

brick & tin, located at 214 20th Street North in historic downtown, is a perfect example of Birmingham's culinary jewels. Chef Mauricio Papapietro restored a shop to reveal tin ceiling tiles and brick walls, hence the name, where he serves gourmet sandwiches made on his breads baked daily.  His soups, particularly the butternut squash, are medicinal! And those deviled eggs!  And the salads and specials, most superb!

Having character does not begin to describe brick & tin's fascade, which gave me food for thought to paint it.  The hues of brown and cream evoke the comfort of it's french press coffee. The angle of the lamps above it's name mimick the curl of the proscuitto nestled next to a deviled egg.  Value changes suggest the darkness of toasty edges of it's bread juxtaposed to the lightness of each slice.  It is a welcome storefront; as gracious as the cuban sandwich!
